The information presented helps to provide a greater understanding, as to the role that family will play in an older relative's life. Where, it will often depend upon relationships and the overall amounts of available public support. The article, Health and Functional Status of Elderly Patients Living in Nursing Homes, looks for common factors that could help contribute to conditions that would increase the chances of some form of dependency, on various assisted living programs when person become older. This was accomplished by looking at 506 elderly men and women living in nursing homes throughout Turin, Italy. What the study found was those who were most commonly from the lower to middle classes within society and are less educated, were most likely to suffer from at least one of these conditions. This information is useful, because it could be used to highlight why particular social / economic classes would most likely to require increased amounts of care when they become older.
